Temporary Roof Scaffolding in London

A temporary roof lets you strip a roof right back without gambling on the London weather. It is a sheeted, self-supporting over-roof carried on the perimeter scaffold, keeping the building — and the trades inside it — dry through a re-roof, a structural repair or a loft conversion. We design, erect and inspect them across London.

When a temporary roof is worth it

Any job that opens up the roof covering for more than a day or two is exposed to rain, and water getting into an open roof damages ceilings, insulation, plaster and the homeowner's patience. A temporary roof removes that risk: the trades can strip, repair timbers, replace felt and batten and re-cover on their own schedule instead of racing the forecast.

It is the sensible choice for full re-roofs, structural roof repairs, fire or storm damage reinstatement, large loft conversions where the roof is opened up, and any heritage or high-value property where water ingress would be expensive to put right.

How a temporary roof is built

A temporary roof is an engineered structure, not just sheeting thrown over a scaffold. The perimeter scaffold is designed to take the extra vertical and wind load, then a series of aluminium beams or a proprietary system spans the roof to form a pitch. That frame is covered with tensioned, flame-retardant sheeting — often a sliding or fixed shrink-wrap — to shed water and let the trades work beneath in the dry.

Because a sheeted roof acts like a sail, the design has to account for wind uplift with the right tie pattern and ballast. This is exactly the kind of non-standard configuration that gets a bespoke design and calculations rather than a stock TG20 sheet.

Weather, dust and safety

Beyond keeping rain out, a temporary roof contains dust and debris, which matters on occupied and terraced London properties where the neighbours are a few feet away. Encapsulation with shrink-wrap gives a clean, sealed envelope for the works and a tidier site.

Like every scaffold we erect, the temporary roof is inspected before first use, after any alteration and at least every seven days, with the tag updated. After serious weather we check the sheeting and ties before work resumes.

Cost and hire

A temporary roof costs more than an open scaffold because of the extra beams, sheeting and design, but it is usually far cheaper than repairing water damage to a house that was left open. Price depends on the roof span and pitch, the perimeter scaffold beneath it, the hire period and access.

We quote a fixed price after a survey — the perimeter scaffold, the temporary roof, the weekly hire and the dismantle. Tell us the property and the roof works through the quote form and we will confirm within one working day.
